Dennis Walrath
Director / Master Craftsman
Dennis Walrath grew up in Cooperstown, NY and now resides in Unadilla, NY. Unadilla is a community that was founded in the early 1700’s before the revolutionary war and filled with many Victorian homes. He is a Musician, Artist, Puppeteer, and Woodworker for the last thirty years. He lived Off-Grid with no power in his self-built cabin with his wife and two children for 12 years in Treadwell, NY prior to moving to Unadilla. In Treadwell he ran a small program for 5 years as a mentor in gardening and off-grid living.
His love of working with traditional tools came at an early age when his grandfather took him into his shop and started to teach him basic woodworking with hand tools. He then started to develop his skills with his father when they built their own home. Dennis worked in construction for years on and off until he met his mentor, James Green. Jim was able to instruct Dennis in timber framing techniques. Together they built several timber frames from small additions to large cabins. They also restored several buildings in upstate N.Y. that ranged from “out buildings” to “large homes” built in the early 1700’s.
He became an instructor/mentor for Hawk Circle Timber Frames in 2014 and built trail kiosks, 45’x29’ timber frame called “Eagle House” (which is an education center for the institute), restored a carriage house, and built many farm “out buildings”.
Wildwood Construction was born in 2004 as a cumulative of experience in both traditional and convention building. Dennis has taken his master craftsmanship in a direction to help people get back to the earth and live simply.
